Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Most patients have had reconstruction and have little to no feeling and it does not hurt. Yes, it CAN hurt. If you are one of the few who feels pain, we have different types of numbing gels and creams that will make you more comfortable and you will most likely only feel the pressure.

What does 3D realistic mean?

A 3-D effect is created on a flat breast mound to look like a realistic nipple and areola.  It is a non-surgical procedure. The contrast (shadows and highlights) and the layering of pigments create the look of a protruding nipple and it’s contracture.  We can create Montgomery glands that mimic the goosebump looking bumps on the breast, or leave them off if you desire.  The client gets to choose the color, shape, size and look of their own nipple, with my guidance.

Do I get to pick my colors?

Absolutely, we will work together to match your skin tone and your preferences. They are your 3D nipples and areolas and I want you to be happy.

What is the aftercare?

You will be sent home with aftercare products and instructions. It is important to keep the tattoos covered with the Tegaderm that I provide. If you are allergic to adhesives, it is important to keep the new nipples hydrated with Bacitraicin and covered with the non-stick bandages that I provide. No submerging in tubs, hot tubs, pools, lakes, oceans, etc, for 10 days.  No heavy sweating and no tight bra rubbing on the new nipples for a week or two.

Will my insurance cover 3D realistic tattoos?

Most insurance companies will cover the procedure once your deductible has been met.  Please check with your insurance carrier about their payment, coverage, and reimbursement policies on post mastectomy and reconstruction 3D areola/nipples. If you would like to file with insurance, I will be happy to provide you with the necessary paperwork for you to request a reimbursement after the procedure.

I am undecided, can I get a consultation?

Absolutely.  Please check out my website at www.roundtwotatttoo.com and go to medical services and select consultation. Pay via credit card for the consultation and fill out the contact form.  I will then contact you to schedule.  We can discuss the whole process at your consultation and then get you on the schedule for the actual procedure.

How long does it take to get 3D realistic tattoos?

In general, it takes about 2 hours.  It can sometimes takes longer, it depends on many factors (skin type, scar tissue, and symmetry).

What do I wear?

Please wear something comfortable that is 2 pieces- a top and bottom.  I will give you a gown to put on top.  You are welcome to bring your headphones to listen to music and relax.

Can I bring my husband or a guest to my tattoo appointment?

The space is limited so it is not encouraged to bring a guest for the procedure.  You may book a consultation on the website and bring your husband or a guest to the consultation if they have questions or concerns.

How long will the 3D realistic nipples and areolas last and will I need a follow-up appointment?

The 3D realistic nipples and areolas will last for years. Different skin types hold pigments differently so it is hard to predict how long they will last.  Most new tattoos will need a follow-up appointment. The 8 week follow up appointment is included in the original charge.

Why 3D tattoos instead of rebuilding the nipple with surgery?

3D realistic tattoos are fairly quick and easy. Recreating the nipple is a surgical procedure.  Surgically recreated nipples are not simple and frequently flatten out, causing the patient to need 3D realistic tattoos.
